Grimaces - sinopse

When there were sugar cane farms full of slaves in Brazil, in one specific farm called Santo Amaro’s Acupe, during a local party, one of the slaves disguised himself with Banana’s tree dry leaves and a mask made of paper to run away, he succeed. The population notice that and began to disguised themselves too, on the same time of the year as the first masquerade, initiating a popular manifestation known today as the “Acupe’s Grimace”. The production and creation mask’s method, the skirts made from the banana’s tree dry leaves and everything else used as a costume, plus the manifestation itself, when the group of masquerade people goes out trough their small town, keeping up an old tradition from their ancestral, are documented in this video.
